In a world where star kids often follow the dazzle of cinema lights, one chose the glow of public service instead. Srutanjay Narayanan, son of renowned Tamil actor, comedian, and director Chinni Jayanth, has scripted an inspiring story, trading the glamour of films for the grind of the Union Public Service Commission ( UPSC). Ranked 75th in the Civil Services Examination 2019, Srutanjay is now a proud IAS officer serving the nation.

A Star Kid Who Chose Service Over Stardom
Born and raised in Chennai, Srutanjay Narayanan could have easily stepped into the world of Tamil cinema, a space where his father, Chinni Jayanth, earned fame for his comic timing and mimicry. Known for his roles in popular Tamil films and as host of TV shows such as Sagalai Vs Ragalai and Asathapovathu Yaaru, Chinni Jayanth received the prestigious Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu government for his contribution to cinema.

Yet, Srutanjay took a path that few in his circle would have imagined—one that required relentless hard work, solitude, and patience.

Academic Excellence and UPSC Success
An alumnus of College of Engineering, Guindy, Srutanjay pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Science and Cartography, followed by a Master’s in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Ashoka University. His interest in geography, he says, was not just academic but deeply philosophical. Speaking to Indian Masterminds, he reflected, “Because of the application-based nature of the science, you can learn a little bit of everything. In that way, it is comparable to studying for UPSC.”

After an initial setback in his first attempt, Srutanjay cleared the UPSC CSE 2019 in his second attempt, securing an impressive All India Rank of 75.

Lessons from His Journey
Srutanjay attributes his success to consistent learning, humility, and an openness to seek guidance. “It never hurts to have mentors you can contact. It helps you stay encouraged throughout the process,” he told Indian Masterminds. He added that during his preparation, he relied on wisdom from all corners—“my parents, friends, instructors, co-workers, and even cab drivers.”

He also believes that the journey of preparation is as important as the destination. “It is important not to stop and continue learning. Consistent practice compounds learning,” he said, stressing that patience and perseverance are indispensable for aspirants.

According to Srutanjay, the UPSC journey demands clarity of purpose. “Becoming an IAS is a tough choice, but not having a vision is tougher,” he remarked in the same interaction. His philosophy extends beyond personal achievement—he believes in building ecosystems where “everyone can excel” and in embracing multiplicities that define a progressive society.

The Tamil film fraternity was quick to celebrate Srutanjay’s success. Superstar Rajinikanth personally called Chinni Jayanth to congratulate him on his son’s remarkable feat.

Beyond Bureaucracy
Srutanjay Narayanan’s life is not confined to files and fieldwork. His LinkedIn profile reveals a man of multiple passions—someone who has managed skill development projects for a global MNC, directed plays, curated symposiums, and engaged deeply with issues of governance and inclusion. His social media describes him as a music and heritage enthusiast, and a history and travel buff.

Currently, Srutanjay serves as the Joint Chief Executive Officer at the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency. Earlier, he was the Sub-Collector of Tiruppur district and has also served as Assistant Collector in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
