A woman and her boyfriend have been arrested for allegedly installing a hidden camera in a bathroom at a women’s hostel for Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd employees in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu.
According to Superintendent of Police Thangadurai quotes by TOI, the accused are Neelukumari Gupta (22) from Odisha, an employee at Tata Electronics’ Nagamangalam facility who stayed at the women’s hostel, Vidiyal Residency in Lalikkal, and her boyfriend Santhosh (25). Santhosh was apprehended by Udanapalli police from Bengaluru. Police said Neelukumari had installed the camera in the bathroom following instructions from Santhosh.
Vidiyal Residency, which has 11 floors and eight blocks, accommodates over 6,000 women, with four occupants per room. The hidden camera was placed on November 2 in the bathroom of a room occupied by women from northern states, of which Neelukumari was one of the residents. The camera was discovered by the other women on Tuesday and immediately reported to hostel management, said ASP Shankar.
The revelation caused unrest among hostel inmates. On Tuesday evening, over 2,000 residents staged a protest. Following the incident, Hosur Additional Collector Aakriti Sethi and the SP visited the hostel, with more than 100 police personnel deployed to maintain order and facilitate discussions. Parents of several women employees also gathered outside the hostel on Wednesday. Police managed to pacify both the women and their families.
As a precaution, more than 200 women chose to return to their hometowns with their belongings. ASP Shankar confirmed that police were examining footage recovered from the camera. “Ten police teams, comprising policewomen, were checking each room to determine whether there were more hidden cameras,” he added.
