Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A pilgrimage meant to bring peace and blessings ended in heartbreak for a Chandigarh family, as a bus carrying Sikh devotees back from Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib Gurudwara in Nanded met with a devastating accident early Saturday morning. The bus, loaded with around 50 pilgrims, rammed into a trailer truck on the Bypass near Hotel Lily under Lasudia police station limits at around 4:30 am.
The collision claimed the life of Gurpreet Singh (37), who was seated in the bus cabin at the time. A resident of Mohali, Chandigarh, Gurpreet was travelling with his wife and two children. At least ten women and children sustained minor injuries in the mishap and were treated at a local facility.
Gurpreet celebrated wedding anniversary just a day before
The tragedy is all the more painful for Gurpreet’s family, who had celebrated his wedding anniversary just a day prior to the accident, while still on the journey.
A property dealer by profession, Gurpreet had joined the pilgrimage with his family for spiritual solace. His wife and children, still reeling from the shock, were not immediately informed of his death.

Fellow passenger Amritpal Singh, who witnessed the crash, recalled the harrowing moments after the impact. “There was blood everywhere. We waited over 30 minutes for an ambulance, but none came,” he said.
In a desperate attempt to save Gurpreet, who had sustained severe head injuries, another passenger placed him on a motorcycle and rushed him to a nearby private hospital. Unfortunately, Gurpreet succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Gurpreet had just switched to the front seat moments before the crash
Fate played a cruel hand—Gurpreet had been seated at the back for most of the journey but decided to sit at the front shortly before the accident. “We had been taking turns sitting near the driver,” said Amritpal. “He moved to the front just to talk to the driver and make sure he wasn’t falling asleep.” Moments later, the crash occurred.
Heading to Agra before returning to Chandigarh
The pilgrims had departed from Nanded on Friday afternoon, with a plan to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra before reaching home in Chandigarh. Their spiritual journey, however, was cut short by the accident that turned a celebration into mourning.
Police probe underway
Police officials from Lasudia station have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. A post-mortem examination was conducted, and statements from passengers are being recorded to understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
