Indian pop music pioneer and Goa’s beloved icon Remo Fernandes has announced the cancellation of his eagerly awaited performance at the UK-Goan Festival in London due to a serious medical crisis. The veteran singer, now based in Porto, Portugal, shared in a late-night Facebook post that he must undergo an urgent burr hole surgery on July 16 to address life-threatening internal cranial bleeding.
The news came as a shock to thousands of Goans living in the United Kingdom and Europe, who were preparing to attend Remo’s first exclusive show for the UK-Goan community on August 3. Known for hits such as Maria Pita Che and Hum Dono, Remo has remained a towering figure in India’s music scene for decades.

According to O Heraldo, The health scare began when the singer suffered a severe fall in his hotel room while attending the Valladolid Literary Festival in Spain. Although he initially felt well after returning home to Porto, he soon developed relentless headaches and problems with balance.
Diagnosis and Medical Verdict
An MRI scan revealed a progressively worsening internal hemorrhage pressing against his brain. Consulting renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Oscar Alvas, Remo was warned that the bleeding had grown alarmingly within ten days. In his own words, he recounted the doctor’s explanation, "This blood is pushing your brain against the skull, causing headaches and disequilibrium. You need urgent surgery."

While the cancellation disappointed many, fans worldwide have flooded his social media with messages of support, praying for his swift recovery.
What is Burr Hole surgery and how is it done?
Burr hole surgery is a minimally invasive neurosurgical procedure used to relieve pressure on the brain caused by bleeding (hematoma) or fluid build-up. Under anesthesia, a neurosurgeon makes a small incision in the scalp and drills one or more tiny holes, known as burr holes, into the skull. Through these openings, a catheter is inserted to drain accumulated blood or fluid, thereby reducing dangerous pressure that can damage brain tissue.
The procedure is often life-saving in cases of subdural hematoma, as seen in Remo Fernandes’ case. Recovery usually requires a short hospital stay, during which doctors monitor neurological function and ensure that bleeding has stopped. Burr hole surgery is considered safer and less invasive compared to open craniotomy, making it the preferred option for many patients with internal cranial bleeding.
