India-US FTA: These meetings come at a time when several major issues have surfaced in India-US relations. These include tariffs on Indian imports, increased visa fees, and 100% tariffs on branded and patented medicines.

Amid the Donald Trump administration's tariffs on Indian imports, a delegation led by India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, visited the United States from September 22nd to 24th. During the visit, extensive discussions were held on strengthening trade relations and increasing investment between the two countries. The government issued a statement stating, "
India and the United States will strive to reach an early conclusion on a mutually beneficial trade agreement."
Goyal met with
US Ambassador Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative, and US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor. These meetings discussed bilateral trade issues. The Indian delegation also met with major US-based companies and investors with the aim of further promoting trade and investment between India and the US.
Positive Signs on Agreement
According to a government statement, meetings with US officials were constructive. Both sides discussed the framework of a potential trade agreement and decided to continue negotiations to reach a mutually beneficial agreement as soon as possible. US business leaders present at the meeting expressed confidence in India's growth trajectory and expressed a desire to further accelerate their business activities in India.
These meetings come at a time of significant issues in India-US relations. These include tariffs on Indian imports, a new $100,000 fee on visa applications, and a 100% tariff on branded and patented medicines.
Investment promotion was also discussed.
In addition to meetings with representatives of the Trump administration in the US on bilateral trade matters, the delegation also held extensive discussions with leading US businesses and investors to promote trade and investment between New Delhi and Washington.
