Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar immediately condemned Virat Kohli's dangerous and unacceptable act during the IPL 2025 final between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. RCB, who came to bat first, were trailing in the game as boundaries were difficult to score and this prompted Kohli to quickly score two and three runs. In the 12th over of the RCB innings bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal, Kohli ran to take a quick double run on the fifth ball. The right-handed batsman sent the ball outside the long-on fielder and immediately asked for two runs. The throw came towards the non-striker end where Liam Livingstone dived and comfortably took his spot.

However, Sunil Gavaskar, who was on air at the time, immediately noticed Kohli running straight down the pitch. That's when he slammed the umpires for not reprimanding the former RCB captain for a dangerous move that could have changed the pitch conditions in the second innings and made the 22 yards look more sloppy when Punjab Kings came on top. Gavaskar said on air that Kohli runs fast between the wickets. As soon as he hit the ball, he knew it was two. He said two while running straight down the pitch. No umpire would ever tell him. He is again running straight down the pitch. Punjab Kings are batting second.
Kohli's strike rate sparked debateVirat Kohli's approach in the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings sparked a huge debate. The batsman tried to rotate the strike instead of hitting big. During his stint on the English broadcast, former Australia opener Matthew Hayden criticised the approach, saying that Kohli should try to score big as a score of 200 is a par score on the Ahmedabad surface. Kohli was finally dismissed by Afghanistan pacer Azmatullah Umarzai in the 15th over. The right-handed batsman returned to the dugout after scoring 43 runs off 35 balls.
