Kevin De Bruyne transfer: Napoli release statement on move for Belgian after Man City exit

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has confirmed that the champions want to sign 's when he becomes a free agent this summer. The Belgian's contract will expire and he's currently considering his options.

It was confirmed several weeks ago that when his contract came to an end this summer. The playmaker, now 33, has enjoyed a trophy-laden career and has maintained he still has a lot to offer.

A move was originally touted, but the player has confirmed he will head overseas and Napoli have made no secret of their desire to bring him in. They claimed the Italian title on Friday night with wanting to bolster his squad.

De Bruyne would be a huge coup for the Naples outfit and their president has made it clear that they want to sign the Belgian - and it will now depend on whether he has the desire to move to Italy.

De Laurentiis told II Mattino: "We want Kevin De Bruyne, we want to sign him. We need his approval in order to make it happen." The City man has not yet communicated his next move.

The City star has only played in two of Europe's top five leagues. The bulk of that has been in England but previously he has excelled in Germany. During his stint with Wolfsburg he was named the German of the Year before moving to Manchester.

De Bruyne has also been linked with a move to Inter Miami in the MLS, but may favour a switch to Italy, where he'd be able to continue playing in the . The Belgian bid an emotional farewell to the club earlier this week after City's final home game of the season.

He said: "Manchester is home, it is where my kids were born. I came here with my wife to stay for a long time, didn't expect it to be ten years, to do what we've done as a club. We've won everything, we made the club bigger and now they're going to take over.

"I wanted to play with creativity, with passion, I wanted to enjoy football and I hope everybody enjoyed it. Everybody from inside and outside of the club made me so much better than I was before, its been an absolutely honour to plat with these guys. I've made friends for life, I'll be back for sure."
