A tourist has shown a less glamorous side to one of Europe's most beloved cities - sparking fierce debate online. Last year, a staggering 20 million visitors flocked to Venice - significantly outnumbering the city's resident population and resulting in calls for a strict clampdown.
It is estimated that around seven out of 10 visitors were day-trippers, which led to the hotspot implementing a controversial tourist tax that has been extended to this summer. Those heading over to the Italian city for the day from April 18 to July 27 will have been hit with a €5 surcharge.
Fail to make a reservation in advance and this fee doubles to €10 (around £8.34). But it seems even this drastic measure isn't enough to deter travellers from visiting. It comes after Spanish islands fear Brits won't return as tourists are dealt another blow.

Taking to TikTok, American tourist Jenn posted a video showing just how insanely cramped and busy Venice gets during the summer months. Her video, which has garnered more than 106,000 views, shows water taxis filled to the brim with tourists, while narrow alleys are also clogged with bustling holidaymakers.
It seems worlds away from the serene images of Venice plastered on travel agents' windows. However, to avoid the selfie-stick stampede, Jen headed over to Murano - a quieter island located away from the Central Square.
You won't find St Mark's Basilica or Doge's Palace here, which is why it is often much quieter. However, Murano is world-famous for its glass-making, and is filled with quaint coffee shops, restaurants and similarly stunning architecture.
Flocking to the comments section, swathes of viewers slammed Venice's insatiable popularity, with one user branding it an 'overrated city'. Another fumed: "I was only in Venice with my mother for three hours because it was just too crowded. It was absolutely no fun being there. I can recommend Chioggia for that. It's a bit busier these days, but still pleasant."
A third added: "Venice is like that all year long. Wait until you see how it is for carnival, this is nothing compared," while a fourth argued: "Venice is always like this."
However, others quickly jumped to the city's defence - arguing that while it can get busy, it's well worth putting up with the crowds. "Venice is insanity but there's a reason for it," one person commented. "It's definitely one of the most gorgeous cities on the planet. It's very special."
Another agreed, writing: "Venice is beautiful. I love it so much," while a third penned: "We loved it here. We were there last month."
