In the 1990s, comedy dramas centered around the concept of two wives or wife-wife rivalries were hugely popular. Govinda was the king of such films, and Aamir Khan had already established himself as a top star. But in 1998, a film with one hero and two heroines captured the audience’s hearts and overshadowed even Aamir’s hits.
The film was none other than Gharwali Baharwali, starring Anil Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Rambha. Directed by David Dhawan, this comedy drama about a husband caught between his two wives became a favorite and continues to be loved even today.
The story follows Anil Kapoor’s character, already married to Raveena Tandon’s role, who is forced to marry Rambha’s character against his will. The film also featured veteran comedians like Satish Kaushik, Kader Khan, Asrani, and Tiku Talsania, adding to its comic charm.
Gharwali Baharwali’s music by Anu Malik, with lyrics from Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar, and Sameer, was a big hit, and its songs remain popular decades later.
Made on a budget of 5 crores—a significant amount in those days—the film earned a remarkable 15 crores at the box office, becoming the 17th highest grossing movie of 1998.
