Anshul Kamboj, the young fast bowler from Haryana, made his Test debut for India in the ongoing fourth Test against England in Manchester. At just 24 years old, he became India’s 318th Test cricketer, receiving his Test cap from former wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta.
Born in Karnal, Now on the Global StageBorn on 6 December 2000 in Karnal, Haryana, Anshul Kamboj rose rapidly through India’s domestic ranks with his sharp line-and-length bowling. With a height of 6 feet 2 inches, Kamboj gets natural bounce and swing, which makes him a serious threat in seaming conditions. He is fondly nicknamed “McGrath” by his peers, inspired by his idol Glenn McGrath, for his ability to relentlessly hit a consistent length.
Why Did India Choose Kamboj Now?Kamboj was flown into England only a few days ago, but with Nitish Reddy ruled out due to injury, selectors saw an opportunity to inject fresh pace into the team. His domestic record and temperament made a strong case for immediate inclusion.
Domestic Career and Rise to FameKamboj made his domestic debut in 2022, making an instant impression in the Vijay Hazare Trophy by grabbing 17 wickets in 10 matches. In a historic performance, he once took all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala — becoming only the second Indian and the first fast bowler to achieve this feat after Anil Kumble.
IPL Journey and Mentorship from DhoniThough Mumbai Indians signed him in IPL 2024, he was released the following season. His fortunes changed in IPL 2025 when he joined Chennai Super Kings, where he got a chance to learn under MS Dhoni. The legendary captain helped refine his mental game. Ravichandran Ashwin has also praised him, calling Kamboj one of India’s most tactical and promising bowlers, comparing his approach to Jasprit Bumrah and Zaheer Khan.
