Yama Dwitiya, popularly known as Bhai Dooj, is celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month, immediately after Diwali. While the festival is primarily known for celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, it is also an important day for worshipping Lord Chitragupta. This ritual, also called Masyadhar Puja, involves worshipping pens, inkpots, and ledgers, symbolizing knowledge, record-keeping, and wisdom.
Chitragupta Puja 2025: Auspicious TimeAccording to the Panchang, in 2025, Chitragupta Puja will be observed on Thursday, October 23. The afternoon is considered the most auspicious time, specifically from 1:13 PM to 3:28 PM, allowing for a puja duration of about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Why Is Lord Chitragupta Worshipped on Yama Dwitiya? The worship of Lord Chitragupta on Yama Dwitiya is rooted in Sanatan Dharma and supported by two key mythological beliefs:
Day of Origin: Lord Chitragupta is believed to have been created from the mind of Lord Brahma on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik. The Kayastha community particularly worships him as their ancestor and family deity.
Accounting of Deeds: Lord Chitragupta serves as the assistant and secretary of Yamaraj, the god of death. He maintains a record of all beings’ good and bad deeds. After death, he determines their fate in heaven or hell. Worshipping him on Bhai Dooj is believed to bring blessings of knowledge, wisdom, and success in writing.
Chitragupta Puja is especially performed by students, writers, and businessmen. Here’s the method:
Preparation: Clean and purify the puja area using Ganga water. Place a statue or picture of Lord Chitragupta on a white cloth-covered platform. Keep pens, new notebooks, and ledgers nearby.
Offerings: Present roli, sandalwood paste, rice grains, flowers, and panchamrit. Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks.
Mantras and Meditation: Start with “Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah”. Then chant “Om Shri Chitraguptaaya Namah” 11 or 108 times while meditating on the deity.
Prasad and Aarti: Offer fruits and sweets (especially kheer), perform aarti, seek forgiveness for sins, and distribute prasad to family members.
-
Knowledge and Wisdom: The puja bestows courage, intelligence, and remarkable success in writing, making it ideal for students and writers.
-
Business Growth: Worshipping pens and ledgers brings prosperity and profit to businessmen.
-
Freedom from Sins: Performing the puja with devotion is believed to erase sins and aid in attaining salvation.
-
Relief from Fear of Death: Worshipping Chitragupta removes the fear of untimely death and ensures peace and happiness in life.
