Thirteen years after the original film delivered hearty laughs, Ajay Devgn returns as Jassi in Son of Sardaar 2, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Vijay Kumar Arora. But does the sequel deliver the same magic?
Plot OverviewJassi (Ajay Devgn) is now a married man—though his wife (Neeru Bajwa) seeks a divorce. Wandering aimlessly in London post-breakup, he meets Rabia (Mrunal Thakur), a Pakistani woman living with her family. When Rabia’s daughter falls for a boy from the patriotic Sandhu family—who despise Pakistanis—Jassi steps in, pretending to be the father of Rabia’s daughter to help her win acceptance.
Film VibeThe film is a typical laugh riot, designed as a "no-brainer" entertainer. It's soaked in Punjabi cinema sensibilities, both in tone and presentation. There are hilarious moments that will make the average viewer chuckle, though the film stumbles with outdated and sometimes cringeworthy jokes.
While it's enjoyable in parts, those who prefer nuanced comedy or story-driven content may find it lacking in originality and wit.
Direction & ScreenplayThis is Vijay Kumar Arora’s first Hindi directorial venture after his acclaimed Punjabi film Harjeeta. However, Son of Sardaar 2 leans heavily on old-school humor, like glorifying a father married four times or making infidelity a punchline. At a time when Hindi cinema is evolving with layered storytelling (Drishyam, Raid, Metro In Dino), this style feels a bit stale.
Jassi’s character is overly naive at times—something that doesn’t quite suit a seasoned performer like Ajay Devgn.
Performances-
Ajay Devgn carries the film with his effortless comic timing and charisma.
-
Mrunal Thakur surprises with a bold, confident role and brings freshness to the screen.
-
Ravi Kishan shines as always with his flair and energy.
-
Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh deliver delightful comic punches. Mukul’s presence is especially touching, knowing it may be one of his last on-screen appearances.
-
If you're in the mood for light-hearted fun and just want to escape reality for two hours, Son of Sardaar 2 delivers.
-
If you expect intelligent humor or meaningful storytelling, this one may not hit the mark.
Son of Sardaar 2 is a crowd-pleaser aimed at the masses who enjoy loud, slapstick comedy without diving deep into logic or modern sensitivities. It’s entertaining in spurts, but don’t expect depth.
