Nobody wants rats in their garden, but there are ways to get rid of them that end up harming the pests. However, with a simple hack involving a pretty flower gardeners won't do any harm to rats and mice.
By planting daffodils in your garden, you can deter the pests from running around in your space. The RSPCA has shared some tips on how you can deter the rodents and it's easier than you might think. The charity explains on its website: "Rats and mice commonly live in gardens and parks in the UK as they'll have easy access to food sources, such as food put down for other animals.
"They can be attracted to spilt wild bird food, scattered by birds from feeders or tables. Compost heaps can also be a major attraction as they offer food, shelter and warmth.
"Other attractions can be improperly stored rubbish bags, cat, dog or other pet food (particularly outside pets like rabbits or guinea pigs) and food left out for wildlife such as hedgehogs."
Daffodils act as a repellent. But this isn't the only flower you can plant to deter the pests, you can also plant wood hyacinth and allium.
The RSPCA advises that you reduce or remove any food sources that are accessible to the rodents and you should make sure that any food containers or bins are airtight and rodent-proof.
Daffodils will not only deter the rodents but they'll also look great in your garden.
House Digest says: "These flowers work well in turning rats away due to their scent and because daffodils contain a chemical (i.e., lycorine) that's toxic to mammals.
"By planting these flowers, you can naturally deter rats from digging through your garden space and/or wreaking havoc once they get into your home."
By following this easy tip, you can ensure to keep any rats or mice away from your outdoor space while also making your garden more colourful and picturesque.
British Pest Control Association Advice:- Eliminate any gaps around pipes and under sheds, as rats only need a gap of 15mm to gain entry to a structure
Remove potential nesting sites by keeping yards and gardens clean and tidy
Ensure that drain inspection covers are in a good state of repair and any disused pipes are sealed off
If you feed garden birds, do not do this to excess and use a bird table or feeder basket if possible
Cover any household waste where rats can get access to it and close dustbin lids
