They don't call 'The Mad Scientist' for nothing. The star endured more major disappointment last week when he finished tied for second at the , losing out .
His challenge was ultimately scuppered by a costly 16th and 17th hole on Saturday, where he dropped three shots after twice finding water off the tee. It followed him also failing to come through on the final day at the last month, despite being level with eventual winner early in the fourth round. However, the 31-year-old now has a 'trick' which he believes won't just revolutionise his own game, but also the sport.
DeChambeau has revealed he's ordered his team to get him "balls which fly straighter" in time for the US Open in Oakmont next month. He currently uses Titleist ProV1x Left Dash models, with his power hitting meaning he inevitably strays off line at times.
"Everybody talks about how straight the golf ball now flies," he told the . "Well, upwards of 190 mph like Rory and myself, it's actually quite difficult to control the golf ball. The ball sidespins quite a bit, and it gets hit by the wind quite a bit because our golf balls are just in the air longer. So I'm looking at ways of how to rectify that."

DeChambeau's ambitions may be motivated by self-interest, given that he led the table for driving distance in Quail Hollow but tied for 68th for accuracy. However, he also argued that the issue of ball movement was also affecting his iron game.
"My ball is spinning too much with my wedges," he added. "If I try to hit a full shot, it'll rip off the green. There's something weird with me in general and the way I play golf.
"I'm looking for a ball that launches a lot lower, has controlled spin at a full swing and half swing still has spin. Hopefully, I can go find a golf ball that can do that because I'm not changing my motion. I'm doing too well with that."
It's not the first time that DeChambeau has tried to revolutionise the game of golf. Following his first US Open win in 2020, he began an extreme protein-fuelled diet and blew up to around 240lbs in a bid to overpower golf courses.
He's since admitted the ploy was a mistake and claims to have lost around 30lbs.
