Home cooks have suggested ways to make canned green beans taste even better, and many have shared the same ingredient as their go-to. Canned green beans are a quick, easy and cheap way to add more fibre to any dish. These vegetables are packed full of great nutrients, and it's always handy to have a few cans in the cupboard at home for a variety of dishes. While many view these tinned vegetables as bland and boring, there are many ways to make them pop with flavour.
One Reddit user sought to find out how to make them taste better and received a slew of suggestions, with many people saying the same thing. In a post titled 'Making boring canned green beans more interesting', they explain that they always tend to have a can of green beans in their home, but they want to make them taste more exciting. With green beans being a cheap staple sold in many UK supermarkets for as little as £1.20, it's worth noting the ways in which you can make them tastier.
The Reddit user wrote in their post: "I'm always getting these 4 packs of canned green beans as a quick and thoughtless side to whatever is for dinner. It's green, I always struggle to get something green on the plate and sometimes fresh isn't an option. This last time, I decided to sprinkle in some more salt and added black pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. It was simple and what I had on hand. I let that simmer for a bit. It turned out well. A little more interesting than straight from a can.
"Now I'm curious; what do you do to dress up a dull and bland can of green beans (or any canned vegetables)?"
The post received plenty of responses, and many people said that bacon was their go-to for making canned green beans taste better.
One person wrote: "Bacon ends, cream of mushroom, fried onions. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes. Add another layer of onions and put back in for 5 minutes."
Another said: "Bacon bits and dried cranberries might be good." A third wrote: "Green beans + chopped bacon, brown sugar, butter and soy sauce in a slow cooker on high for an hour. One of my favourites."
Another commented: "A little butter, onion salt, black pepper. I just remembered I have some vegetarian bacon bits which I have to use up; those should work well with canned green beans."
A number of recipes incorporate green beans with bacon. One of them comes from Mandy Rivers, the owner and author of South Your Mouth. She fries her green beans with bacon and says they have a great taste.
