A promising footballer tipped for stardom has tragically perished in a motorbike collision. Jose Antonio Barrientos Lopez, known as 'Tonito', allegedly smashed his motorcycle into an electricity pole whilst riding solo.
The gifted player tragically lost his life at just 20 years of age. He featured for FC Amigos in Honduras' regional Omoa League, yet scouts believed he possessed the potential to secure a transfer to a major South American division.
A club representative described him as "a great friend, player, and brother within the team, after local media reported he collided with an electricity pole close to the club's training facility in Tulian Rio on Friday evening (October 10). Witnesses attempted to assist the severely wounded footballer at the location, however he died from his injuries before paramedics could reach him.
Relatives, friends and teammates honoured the talented striker across social media platforms, sharing devastating messages from supporters. He originated from a distinguished family and enjoyed widespread recognition throughout the region.
His relatives confirmed his remains would be displayed at the Tulian Rio Community Center before yesterday's 2pm burial in Puerto Cortes. "Rest in peace my Tonito God give strength and strength to all his family how sad," one friend said.
"Such terrible news for his entire family. Rest in peace to the young man," a second commented on social media. As a third posted: "Such a pity so young."
Another individual expressed their sorrow, stating: "It's sad to know how people are losing their lives on those motorcycles My deepest condolences to the family of Tonito."
Jose's tragic death adds to the growing tally of 1,424 Hondurans who have tragically lost their lives in road accidents this year.
