England will be honoured with a celebration event in London on Tuesday after overcoming Spain in the Euro 2025 final. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Sarina Wiegman's side ultimately clinching victory following a penalty shootout.
England were out for revenge against the Spanish team after losing to them in the World Cup final two years ago. But they fell behind midway through the first half as Mariona Caldentey fired the ball past Hannah Hampton. The Lionesses then drew level 12 minutes after half time courtesy of a strike from Alessia Russo. Both teams pressed for a winner, with neither of them able to find a second goal before extra time. And the added period proved fruitless as well as the players prepared for spot kicks. Hampton ultimately went on to make two penalty saves in the shootout, with Chloe Kelly smashing in the winning kick.
Celebration event detailsThe FA are planning a victory homecoming celebration event in central London on Tuesday, July 29.
What activities are planned?According to The Guardian, the FA held talks with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Greater London Authority ahead of the final about staging a parade in the event of an England win.
The report adds that a Downing Street reception was discussed, while a visit to Buckingham Palace is also on the agenda for the Lionesses.
The England players enjoyed a trophy parade during a celebration event in Trafalgar Square three years ago following their Euro 2022 success.
On that occasion Wiegman led her side to a 2-1 victory over Germany in the final, with Kelly netting the winner in extra time.
Will Wiegman be honoured?Wiegman was recognised with an honorary CBE after guiding the Lionesses to Euro 2022 success. And she is reportedly in line to be given an honorary damehood after Sunday's success.
"We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible," Wiegman said after her side's triumph over Spain.
"I just can't believe it. I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy. It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch - all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponent.
"From the first game it was chaos. Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible. Football is chaos."
