The National Zoological Park (NZP) in New Delhi began its Global Tiger Day celebrations on July 29 with an engaging, student-focused awareness programme that runs through August 5. The initiative aims to foster awareness among young minds about the importance of tiger conservation and environmental stewardship.
On the first day, more than 250 enthusiastic school students participated in a vibrant array of activities. A key highlight was an insightful session led by Dr. Magesh from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), who addressed pressing environmental concerns and the importance of tiger conservation. He also emphasized the connection between this year’s Tiger Day theme and the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” urging students to support conservation by planting trees.
The NZP education team added to the day’s excitement by organizing a quiz competition, screening a short documentary on tiger conservation, and hosting a fun-filled tiger mask-making activity. The winners of these events were felicitated with prizes, generating enthusiasm and encouraging active participation among the students.
Students also had the opportunity to visit tiger enclosures, where they asked thoughtful questions and deepened their understanding of India’s rich wildlife heritage. An interactive session with the Director of NZP concluded the visit, where the Director lauded the students’ enthusiasm and underscored the need for continuous youth involvement in wildlife protection.
In a symbolic gesture of green commitment, the Director of NZP and the Assistant Inspector General from NTCA’s Regional Office in Nagpur gifted ten saplings to each participating school. The day ended with refreshments, marking a spirited start to the week-long observance of Global Tiger Day at the zoo.
The event not only celebrated tigers but also empowered the next generation to take action in conserving India’s natural treasures.
