Work with public in sea erosion prevention works: Khader

Mangaluru: While undertaking sea erosion prevention works, officials must gain the trust of local residents, said the assembly speaker UT Khader. He was speaking during a meeting with officials held at the Circuit House on Wednesday.

He pointed out that there are widespread objections from the public regarding the use of unsuitable technology for sea erosion works in some areas. "The impact of sea waves varies across different regions. Local fishermen and coastal residents, who have lived by the shore for several decades, possess valuable experiential knowledge about the nature and intensity of sea waves. Their opinions should be considered while carrying out the works," he said.

He noted that the govt has already released a grant of Rs 200 crore for sea erosion protection works in the three coastal districts. Rather than carrying out scattered minor works, targeted and comprehensive works should be undertaken and completed in areas facing the most severe sea erosion, he said.

Further, he said that the fishing jetty work at Ullal Kotepura must commence at the earliest. A suitable location should be allocated for the 150-metre jetty. All related procedures should be completed promptly, he directed. Senior officials were present at the meet.

Appointed

Khader has been appointed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to the National Committee constituted to review the powers and rules of presiding officers. Four speakers from various states were selected for this national committee.

Maharashtra speaker Rahul Narwekar will serve as the chairperson of the committee. The other members include Odisha speaker Surama Padhyand Nagaland speaker Sharingain Longkumer.
