On Thursday, American President Donald Trump appointed Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the interim top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C. He announced the decision through his Truth Social account, describing Pirro as "incredibly well qualified" and "one of the top district attorneys" in New York history.
But who is Jeanine Pirro, and how did she become the interim attorney for D.C.?
Who is Jeanine Pirro?
Jeanine Pirro was born in 1951 in New York to Lebanese-Albanese parents. While her father worked as a mobile-home salesman, her mother was a department-store model. Ever since she was six, Pirro dreamed of being an attorney. Her desire towards fulfilling her ambition was so high that during her high school years, she interned in the Chemung County District Attorney's office. While she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Buffalo, she went on to receive her Juris Doctor degree at Albany Law School in 1975, where she also edited the law review.
Jeanine Pirro's professional career
In 1975, Pirro was appointed as the Assistant District Attorney of Westchester County in New York State by District Attorney Carl Vergari. In 1977, she advised Vergari to apply for a grant to be able to establish bureaus that specialised in domestic violence. After winning the grant, Vergari appointed Pirro as the first chief of the new Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Bureau.
In 1990, she was elected as a judge of the Westchester County Court, becoming the first woman to serve as a judge there. Three years later, she made another record for becoming the first woman to be elected as Westchester County District Attorney , which she won again in 1997 and 2001.
She seems to have been a Trump supporter for years, as in 2018 she wrote a book titled, 'Liars, Leakers, and Liberals: The Case Against the Anti-Trump Conspiracy' where she delved into Trump's presidency and the Anti-Trump movement. Back then, Trump also posed with Pirro and her book in the Oval Office.
Along with being an attorney and author, Pirro has had significant media presence over the years. She is a Fox News legal analyst, has been a regular contributor to The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet and has guest-hosted many other shows. She had a CW Television Network show titled Judge Jeanine Pirro , which aired for two seasons. Recently, Pirro had been the host of Fox News' Justice with Judge Jeanine, however, she left Fox News in May this year.
Now, Jeanine Pirro is the Interim U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C.
Jeanine Pirro's personal life
Pirro shares two children with her former spouse, Albert. The two got married and moved to New York; however, after Albert was proven to have fathered a daughter with another woman and had to serve a prison sentence for filing false tax returns, the two got divorced in 2013.
Pirro's appointment as the interim attorney comes after Trump's nomination of Ed Martin was withdrawn due to significant bipartisan opposition.
