A video going viral on social media shows a disturbing incident during Colombia’s controversial Corraleja festival, where a 35-year-old bullfighter, Yovanis Marquez, was fatally gored by a bull in front of shocked onlookers in Fundacion, Magdalena.
According to the video, Marquez, who was known for his agility and daring manoeuvres in the bullfighting circuit, attempted to leap over the bull but miscalculated and was struck by one of its horns.
The video circulating shows the shirtless Marquez being tossed into the air by the animal.
“He stood up as if he was fine, but the blood was flowing. It was only a few seconds before he fell to the ground,” an eyewitness said, as quoted by news outlet Toronto Sun.
Marquez seemed disoriented but otherwise unharmed at first, even getting up on his own and running off as onlookers tried to help him.
Marquez was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Animal rights group Plataforma ALTO shared the video online, saying, “The man passed away yesterday after being gored by an injured bull, in an act of self-defense, during the ‘festivities’ of the municipality.”
The incident comes amidst growing backlash against such events.
Colombia passed a law in 2024 banning bullfighting, but it will only come into effect in 2027. Activists are now calling for an immediate ban on Corralejas as well.
“It is time to also say: NO MORE CORRALEJAS! Yes to prohibition, no to ‘regulations,’” the group added.
